The Center for Nanoscale Control of Geologic CO2 in the Earth Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow, who will perform laboratory research on basic physicochemical equilibrium and hydrodynamics of brine and condensed CO2 supercritical in geologic media. The primary activities will be on laboratory investigations into capillary and adsorbed fluid equilibrium and transport behavior of brine, CO2, and oil, including interactions with mineral surfaces. Related experiments will focus on brine-CO2 interfacial processes including interactions between pore-scale distributions of phases and transport of ions involved in carbonate precipitation.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will:

– Conduct laboratory experiments to measure physicochemical properties and processes resulting from interactions of brine, CO2, possibly oil, and mineral surfaces, under pressures and temperatures characteristic of deep reservoirs used for geologic CO2 sequestration.

– Conduct this work in a safe manner, in compliance with all health and safety regulations.

– Work with other researchers on this EFRC in order to facilitate progress toward Center goals.

– Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.

– Maintain detailed, well-organized laboratory/experimental notebooks and data files.

– Maintain laboratory equipment and work areas in good order.

Qualifications

– Background in physical/surface chemistry and flow/transport in porous media.

– Experience working independently or with limited supervision using chemical/hydrologic laboratory techniques at ambient and elevated pressure, spectroscopy, and microscopy.

– Ability to design, set up, and run novel experiments, with limited supervision.

– Recent Ph.D., with extensive laboratory research experience in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, environmental engineering, soil chemistry, soil physics, groundwater hydrology, or other related fields.

– Excellent communication skills and ability to write peer reviewed papers with limited supervision.

Notes: This is a full-time one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based on performance, funding, and continued operational needs. Berkeley Lab is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer committed to the development of a diverse workforce.
