Job Description
A 4-year PhD position is available for January or May 2013 at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, on the “Detailed geochronology and geochemistry of the volcanic stratigraphy in the Cape Smith belt of northeast Superior craton and comparison with coeval magmatism of the Nain portion of the North Atlantic craton”. Prof. Paul Sylvester at Memorial University and Prof Richard Ernst at Carleton University will co-supervise the PhD student. The project is part of an industry, government and university consortium to produce robust reconstructions of supercontinents – including the Canadian landmass – back to 2.7 billion years ago using the large igneous province (LIP) record. This outcome will have enormous implications for targeting mineral deposits, exploring for hydrocarbons and earth system evolution.

Similar ages of major Paleoproterozoic mafic-ultramafic magmatism (2040, 1970 and 1880 Ma) are present in both the Cape Smith belt of the northeast Superior craton and the Nain province of the North Atlantic craton. In situ LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology and isotopic and trace element geochemistry will further characterize these magmatic events and test whether comparable age units in both regions are co-genetic. The data will be used to evaluate a model in which the North Atlantic craton was reconstructed against northeast Superior craton, and provide a context for the 1880 Ma magmatic event which hosts significant Ni-Cu-PGE mineralization.

Qualified applicants should submit their CV, copies of their undergraduate and graduate transcripts and the names and e-mail addesses of three referees to Prof. Paul Sylvester at Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The position does not require Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

The position requires a MSc degree in Earth Sciences or related fields, an overall average of 75% or better in undergraduate and post baccalaureate courses, determined using either the last 20 attempted courses for which grades are available, or all courses attempted for which grades are available excluding those in the first year of an undergraduate program. Previous experience with LA-ICP-MS analyses is desirable.
