Wanted Job: Position as Assistant Professor of Geosciences at Upper Iowa University

Job Description
Upper Iowa University, Fayette Campus, is seeking a geoscientist or geographer with GIS expertise and a deep interest in student-centered teaching at the undergraduate level who will contribute to an environment in which diversity is respected, encouraged and nurtured.

This new faculty line, starting in Fall 2013, will complement existing faculty strengths, have broad interests beyond the area of specialization, and contribute to our field-oriented integrative geosciences curriculum. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for excellent teaching in the field, classroom and laboratory, as well as the flexibility and desire to teach a wide range of courses serving the general education program, teacher endorsements, the minor in Earth Science, and the Environmental Science B.S. degree. Courses may include introductory geology, geography, conservation of natural resources, and/or environmental science; and GIS/remote sensing, geomorphology, soils, and/or global climate change at the upper division. We seek an individual who will find opportunities to take advantage of the natural outdoor laboratory of scenic northeast Iowa, the Upper Midwest region, and potentially UIU’s global footprint to engage students in action-learning pedagogies, service learning, and problem-driven community-based research.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in geoscience, geography, or related field is required. Applied skills and facility with geospatial technologies/GIS are also required.

The Assistant Professor of Geosciences position will teach a full course load (22-24 credits/yr); advise and mentor students; supervise student research projects; and provide leadership and service to the university, community, and profession. Teaching assignments are predominantly face-to-face on the Fayette campus, but may require teaching as needed in hybrid, online, domestic center, and international center modalities. The successful applicant is expected to complete training for online teaching during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until position is filled although applications received by January 15, 2013 will receive full consideration. Applicants should submit, in Microsoft WORD or PDF format: a letter of application, statement of teaching philosophy, CV, names and contact information for three professional references, and unofficial graduate transcripts to savagem@uiu.edu.
