Job Description
With 5 000 employees, Forschungszentrum Jülich – a member of the Helmholtz Association – is one of the large interdisciplinary research centres in Europe and stands for the next generation of key technologies. Work with us on the grand challenges in the fields of health, energy & environment, and information technology, as well as on the many and varied tasks of research management.

KU Leuven is a university with nearly 600 years of history and around 10 000 members of staff. It provides dynamic, research-based education to tens of thousands of students. KU Leuven claims a place among Europe’s top centres of learning, and its voice can be heard throughout the global scientific discourse. We provide a stimulating home for all types of research, from fundamental to applied, and from individual projects to large-scale, international research consortia.

In a joint appointment procedure with KU Leuven (Belgium), Forschungszentrum Jülich is seeking an internationally respected scientist for the position of

DIRECTOR and FULL PROFESSOR (W 3) at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere

The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences (IBG) focuses on research for the sustainable production of foodstuffs, biological energy carriers, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and materials produced on the basis of plant and microbial processes or principles, on the sustainable use of the natural resources of soil and water, and on the analysis and optimization of material cycles and energy use.

Agrosphere (IBG-3) investigates hydrological and biogeochemical processes in terrestrial systems in order to provide knowledge on how to use natural resources such as soil and water in a sustainable manner.

The applicant should be an internationally recognized research scientist focusing on water, solute and energy transport processes in porous media (soil, groundwater) as well as their coupling with transport phenomena in the atmospheric boundary layer. Particularly, the role of these processes in soil-plant and soil-plant-atmosphere systems, and the impact of processes at the small-scale on larger scales should be addressed. The successful candidate will be expected to apply multi-scale and multi-physics simulation models based on data from experimental platforms using high-performance computing facilities.

The position is coupled with a full professorship in Terrestrial Modelling at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at KU Leuven (Belgium) in accordance with the „Jülich model“. Active participation in ongoing and planned research collaborations of the two institutions will be expected, as well as a contribution (two hours a week) to bachelor‘s and master‘s programmes at KU Leuven.

Prerequisites for the position are a PhD in science, engineering or related fields, an extensive scientific track record, experience in leading a research team, and in the acquisition of third-party funds. Teaching experience at university level is expected. International research experience is highly appreciated.

The implementation of equal opportunities is a cornerstone of staff policy at Forschungszentrum Jülich and KU Leuven. Applications from women are therefore particularly welcome.

We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
