Post-Doctoral Position in Atmospheric Sciences At University of Utah

University of Utah Atmospheric SciencesJob Description
The funded research opportunities in our group include efforts to understand the wide range of observed vertical velocity and microphysics profiles in convective clouds around the world, that are closely linked to major differences in radar- and satellite-observed properties of deep convection over land and ocean. The selected candidate will run high- resolution convective scale models with a range of setups that include different microphysics parameterizations, and evaluate them by targeted comparisons with comprehensive observational datasets. These comparisons will guide redesigns of microphysics parameterizations and model setups focused on improving agreement between simulations and observations, but also improving understanding of the impacts of these complex interactions on convective and stratiform structure. The candidate will write manuscripts for publication, in collaboration with faculty and graduate students, as well as with outside colleagues. Opportunities to participate in field campaigns are likely.

Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, a strong mathematics and physics background, excellent writing skills, proficiency with high-resolution atmospheric models such as WRF, and strong programming abilities (familiarity with Linux, FORTRAN, IDL or Matlab, and Python are desirable). The position is available starting in Spring or Summer 2013. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable dependent on the performance and availability of funding.

Please submit a complete CV, a letter expressing research interests, and the names and contact information for 3 references to Prof. Edward Zipser (

This position will require the successful completion of a criminal background check.
