4 PhD positions are available at the Exploration Geophysics at GPX Paris (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris.

Job Description
Applications are invited for PhD positions in Exploration Geophysics at GPX Paris (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) and Ecole des Mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech)

The Groupe de Géophysique d’Exploration à Paris (GPX Paris) is a new group jointly established by IPGP and Mines ParisTech to develop a strong research and teaching program in exploration geophysics from data acquisition through to imaging, reservoir characterization and monitoring. IPGP is one of the leading Earth Science Institutes in the world, while Mines ParisTech is one of the top French Engineering Schools. This new initiative is funded by the French National Research Agency and several industry partners.

The PhD research areas include: 1. Electro-Seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Optimisation of survey design, while establishing data conditioning that leads to advanced interpretation of hydrocarbon reservoirs and their fluid properties. 2. Exploitation of long and short offset seismic data through elastic full waveform inversion in conjunction with electromagnetic and well log data to establish a step change in characterisation of reservoir and fluid. 3. Monitoring changes in reservoir properties through the application of multi-physics measurements and their inversion.

The projects will be supervised by internationally renowned scientists who are actively engaged in research from IPGP, Mines ParisTech, Shell, CGGVeritas and Schlumberger. IPGP is housed in a new purpose-built centre in the Latin Quarter of Paris close to the Botanical Gardens and within walking distance of Notre Dame cathedral. The IPGP building hosts a large number of experimental facilities, a geophysical data centre and a state-of-the-art parallel computing cluster.
