Faculty Positions At Department of Geography & Environmental Sustainability – University of Oklahoma

The Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability (http://geography.ou.edu/) at the University of Oklahoma seeks nominations and applications for four tenure-track faculty positions. Initial appointment to all four positions will begin August 2014. Salary and remunerations are competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

About the Department: Over the past three years, the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability has doubled the number of undergraduate majors to over 150. The Department has 46 graduate students, including 26 Ph.Ds, and 20 M.As. New hires will bring to 19 the number of permanent, tenured or tenure-track faculty members, an increase of over 70% since 2010. An additional search for an endowed professorship in water and sustainability will be announced shortly. Recently added faculty members have expertise in remote sensing, environmental sustainability, science policy, and applied climatology, complementing our existing strengths in human and physical geography. The department now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Geography, GIS, and Environmental Sustainability.

Candidates interested in collaborative research will find many exciting opportunities within the Department, College, and University. The Department is home to the Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative, Land Use Land Cover Institute, Working Group on the Geographies of Race and Representation of the Americas, and Environmental Verification and Analysis Center. The College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences hosts the National Weather Center, South Central Climate Science Center, Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program, and the Center for Spatial Analysis. The University hosts the Center for Applied Social Research and Earth Observation and Modeling Facility as well as the Archeological, Biological, Climatological, Geological, and Water Surveys.

Screening will begin November 1, 2013. Associate / Full Professor in Geographic Information Sciences

We seek a tenured Associate or Full Professor in the area of Geographic Information Science (GIS) and its applications. Candidates must have a track record of publications in high quality refereed journals, successful external grant funding, and evidence of teaching excellence. The ideal candidate for this position shall possess an earned doctorate in geography or related discipline and must have strong quantitative and GIS skills. Desirable areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): applied GIS, spatial statistics, big-data mining, modeling, and/or spatial programming. Candidates who apply these skills to societal problems are strongly encouraged to apply. Teaching duties will include both undergraduate and graduate courses in GIS. The ability to teach spatial programming and spatial statistics is an advantage.

Our expectation is that the successful candidate will help recruit/attract an additional junior level faculty member also in GIS and lead efforts to develop graduate degrees in GIS. Therefore, candidates with leadership qualities are especially encouraged to apply.

Assistant/Senior Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Physical Geography

The Department seeks a physical geographer with a strong background in large-scale watershed dynamics or fluvial geomorphology. The successful candidate shall be willing to teach introductory and/or intermediate level physical geography, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in geomorphology, hydrology, or soils. The successful candidate will also have an active research agenda and have experience in obtaining external funding for his or her research. The University of Oklahoma is heavily invested in the water enterprise, so the successful candidate will have numerous opportunities to collaborate across campus. Candidates are expected to have attained a doctoral degree in geography or closely related field by the start date. Post-doctoral experience is desirable.

Assistant Professor (tenure–track) in Land Use-Land Cover Change

Recently, the University of Oklahoma and sister institutions in the state were awarded a $24 million EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) grant to improve infrastructure to advance understanding about how socio-ecological systems can adapt to climate variability. A major program of study also has been initiated in the social, human, behavioral, and economic aspects of weather and climate within the University’s Center for Applied Social Research. It is within this rapidly expanding environment that the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability invites applications from highly qualified candidates for the positions described below.

We seek an individual dedicated to the expansion of a robust program in land use-land cover modeling and analysis that focuses on ecosystem responses and feedbacks, the climate system, or ecosystem services. The candidate must be capable of research excellence in land use-land cover modeling with the ability to work in a team environment with collaborations that include research activities within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability and the newly established Department of the Interior’s South Central Climate Science Center as well as collaborators at Oklahoma State University, the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, and the University of Tulsa. The successful candidate must have strong quantitative and computational skills in model development/enhancement, GIS, and/or remote sensing. The applicant must possess a doctorate degree in geography or related discipline by the start date. Teaching duties will include both undergraduate and graduate courses in the applicant’s area of specialization. Persons from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Ecological Economics

This newly created position is also funded in part by the EPSCoR grant described above. We seek highly qualified candidates with research and teaching focus in ecological economics. The successful candidate must have expertise in ecosystem service valuation, including a focus on one or more of the following areas: cost-benefit analysis, hedonic pricing, contingent valuation, risk assessment, market-based policy instruments, and input-output modeling. Candidates are expected to have attained a doctoral degree in economics or closely related field by the start date.

The successful candidate will work in a team environment with collaborations that include research activities within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability and the newly established Department of the Interior’s South Central Climate Science Center, the Department of Economics, the Center for Risk, Crisis and Analysis, as well as collaborators at Oklahoma State University, the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, and the University of Tulsa.
